Innovative approach in combating bacterial infections featured on the cover of Applied Bio Materials. Cheng-Yu Lai and coworkers (International University of Florida) investigated the use of multifunctional nanomaterials, such as MSN-ReS2, as a highly efficient light-responsive nanoparticle with controlled-release drug delivery capability. The results demonstrate over 99% bacterial killing efficiency in both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria upon laser irradiation. Loaded with tetracycline hydrochloride, the MSN-ReS2 shows a remarkable 100% bactericidal effect on Gram-negative bacteria, revealing its potential as a synergistic wound-healing therapeutic.

This illustration was featured on the cover of the journal Colloids and Surfaces B: Biointerfaces. The research was conducted by Sofiane EL-Kirat-Chatel, Audrey Beaussart and coworkers at CNRS.
Their study focused on exploring the antimicrobial effects of squalamine, a natural compound derived from dogfish sharks, on the troublesome Gram-positive bacterium, Staphylococcus epidermidis. Using atomic force microscopy (AFM), the researchers revealed the binding mechanism of squalamine to the bacterial cell surface, driven by electrostatic interactions.
This work demonstrated the utility of AFM and microbiological assays in unraveling the molecular mechanisms underlying squalamine's antibacterial properties.
